repetitive history…

repetitive history

They say history is written by the victors.  I don’t believe that’s entirely true.

I knew a Victor once, and he never wrote anything other than a check.

To say that history repeats itself is a bit of a fib too.  It’s not that history repeats itself, rather, the people who don’t learn anything from those before them.  When you see it written, sure, it’s a repeat…but it doesn’t seem that way when you’re living it.  You’re just trying to make it through the day without catching anything or being someone’s minion.  If you don’t learn from the past, you can’t stick and move like Rocky.  Even those that say they will not repeat tend to do just that.  Are they under the impression that THEY were the first ones to say that?  That’s a little egotistical if you ask me.

There’s no way an entirely new trail can be blazed… because each step is built upon the step or steps of someone from the past.  I guess the only thing you can do is wear different shoes and hope for the best.  Let those in the future figure it out…because they’ll be by soon enough.

The real challenge is to be more intentional about what parts of our personal history we repeat. Unless we make a concerted effort to be aware of the footsteps of those who came before, the three prior generations of our family of origin, chances are we will repeat their reaction patterns, good or bad. After all, that’s what we learned growing up and it’s ingrained in our Limbic brain, the reaction center. If we understand our reactions and where they come from, then we stand a chance of choosing how we want to act instead of reacting. In Bob’s words we can put on a different pair of shoes and choose our own path or at least leave distinctive footprints. I find it’s not easy but I’m working on it. Thanks for the reminder, Bob.
